Implementation and Validation of an Advanced Wind Energy Controller in Aero-Servo-Elastic Simulations Using the Lifting Line Free Vortex Wake Model
Round 1
Reviewer 1 Report
The authors implemented an advanced wind energy controller into the aeroelastic software and presented an interesting study. Overall, the work is well put together. One minor concern is that the authors should put a length scale and contour legend in Figure 8.

The paper presents an open-source tool for control of wind-turbine, TUBCon. The toolbox is based on standard techniques of control (namely PID controllers), and it aims at controlling pitch and torque, as well as supervisory controllers.
The tests are performed using an aeroelastic simulation code and verified against a turbine controller.
One of the main merit of the paper is to provide a rather complete explanation of the implemented controllers and tests for different turbulent wind level-sets which give the confidence the open-source tool can actually be applied in real situations. In that sense, I found the investigation rather compelling.
On a negative note, it can be improved for what concerns the presentation. In particular
- I felt the captions are not informative enough due to the rather large notations introduced: although everything is defined in the text, for the sake of readability it would be better to have longer, self-contained captions.
- There are some paragraphs which I felt are a bit vague or verbose (for instance in lines 133-170).
Finally, English is of good level, although I spotted some typos and some loose ends.

The paper is concerned with performance of the TUB Controller, an advanced open-source wind turbine controller capable of performing full load calculations. The manuscript is well-written with a clear presentation and figures on massive technical issues.
Could you please elaborate on the possible use of neural networks instead of PID regulators?
To summarize, I suggest to accept the paper.

The study describes the controller and includes a validation study using an established open-source controller. In addition, the advanced load reduction capabilities of the individual pitch control strategy are investigated. In general, it can be acceptable to publish as a journal paper. Minor revisions should be conducted before publication. Many abbreviations have been used in the manuscript, it is better to give a seperate part to describe the abbreviations.
