Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

This paper deals with the realization of a load simulator consisting of two motors connected in parallel. The introduction provides very limited bibliography references for further reading. A few important paper are missing. Section 2 and 3 share the same title (this is a mistake?)
However, section 3 is not very clear, especially the equations of the motors (DC motors?)
Also section 4 is not clear at all. In Fig. 4 should be added a few label to explain the meaning of input/output signal.
Results of MATLAB simulations are not convincing. Is not clear how P, I, D parameters have been tuned.
In addition the proposed design stategy should be applied to an automotive drivetrain or some like that, otherwise this paper is not in the field of interest of this journal (latest developments and knowledge about electric vehicles. Electric, Plug-in Hybrid, Hybrid Electric, or Fuel Cell Vehicle). In my opinion the paper is this form is out of scope, and is not suitable to be published in this journal.

Minor:
* check the title of the axis of all figures, and the unit of measures
* fig. 9 is not readable

Reviewer 2 Report

Aiming at the output torque error of steering gear electric load simulator caused by excess torque and backlash interference, an electric load simulator based on double motor loading is designed. The double motor loading mode is adopted in the structure, the mathematical model is established, and the sources of excess torque and backlash interference are analyzed. The topic is relevant to this field and complements previous research with the improved cross coupling control method to ensure the stable operation of the torque controller and backlash compensator in the dual motor system. The conclusions are consistent with the arguments and results presented in the paper and give a good presentation of the topic. References are appropriate, but more recent ones should be added.

The paper is well written, but minor corrections are needed:

The Abstract needs to be improved;

The introduction must be corrected and must contain a broader overview of the latest literature;

In Figure 10, improve the text, presentation and/or legend;

The Conclusion needs to be improved.

Reviewer 3 Report

This paper presents a study on the control method of a dual motor load simulator to improve the loading accuracy and dynamic performance of the load simulator under the interference of redundant torque and backlash. The manuscript is well-constructed and presented. However, there are some comments and suggestions that could help to enhance the quality of this paper by the following.

1. The abstract should identify the performance improvement data of the proposed method compared with the traditional method.

2. Authors should summarize the novelty and contributions of this research over the previous works in the Introduction section.

3. If there are mathematical formulations taken from other studies, they should have references.

4. The title of Section 2 and Section 3 are the same which should be revised.

5. The sentence in line#111 is not clear, and the symbols in the sentence in line#180 are missing.

6. There is a box in the system structure diagram (Fig. 5) that is a duplicate. Please recheck and correct them.

7. Please give some research challenges or future works in the Conclusions section.

Round 2

Reviewer 1 Report

The paper was improved with respect to the initial version. But there are a few minor changes.

* Please indicate a few possible automotive/vehicular application for this work
* check the title of the axis of *ALL* figures, and the unit of measures.
* Please use the style Time [s], not time /s, etc.

Author Response

Thank you very much for your comments. We have modified it according to our comments. If you think our modification is not perfect, please put forward your comments again so that we can continue to improve it.

Point 1: Please indicate a few possible automotive/vehicular application for this work

Response 1: Thank you very much for your comments. We have added the application of load simulator in electric vehicles at the introduction. As a test device, the load simulator is mainly used in the development process of electric vehicles, such as the development and testing of electric motors, or simulating different road conditions to test the control performance and comfort of the whole vehicle under laboratory conditions.

Point 2: check the title of the axis of *ALL* figures, and the unit of measures. Please use the style Time [s], not time /s, etc.

Response 2: Thank you for your comments. We have revised the full text of the diagram according to your requirements.
