Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

Some comments to help the authors improve the article:

  • The Introduction section is in fact a Literature review. The purpose of the Introduction is to make the reader understand the purpose and the importance of the research in a specific domain. Please reconsider.
  • What kind of wastes are used in the bottom layer? If they don`t belong to the group you have analyzed, why didn`t you study them, because they represent 60% of the layer.
  • The allochroic powder has 8% of the materials you have examined. Is this percentage relevant for waste management?
  • Are these bricks designated for indoors or outdoors? Indoors temperature should not fall under 20 Celsius, so no economic reason should allow their use.
  • In my opinion, this article is an experiment and does not fit the purpose of the journal. Maybe Material Journals are more appropriate. In a sustainable approach, the authors should develop an environment impact.

Reviewer 4 Report

This article deals with the use of recycled waste for the design of sustainable and environmental friendly building materials with thermochromic function. In particular, this study used six recovered starting components (wood chips, iron powder, fallen leaves, concrete, newspaper) and the physical characterization was carried out by measuring the indoor and outdoor discoloration efficiency and the RGB values with a color analyzer. Herein, the topic is of wide interest and it falls within the scope of the journal. Therefore, I suggest the manuscript to be accepted and published after a few minor revisions:

  • The quality of the graphs must be improved. What is the y-axes unit?
  • I suggest to modify graphs and image format in order to make clear and visible the temperature variations in the x-axes, that is still not clear.
  • Sentences like ‘highest rate of change in B values was observed for fallen leaves (16%), and the minimum rate of change wasobserved for iron powder (3%)’ are not very cleare. I suggest to explain better these observations
  • Temperature values reported in figure 6 are not clear.

Moreover, the introduction might be improved reporting research toward green plastics and eco-sustainable smart materials. See for instance  Journal of Functional Biomaterials, 2018, 9(4),60 DOI: 10.3390/jfb9040060 and Dalton Transactions, 2020, 49, 3830-3840 DOI: https://doi.org/10.1039/C9DT03804C

Round 2

Reviewer 1 Report

The authors made a lot of changes, but didn`t answer my questions and recommendations.

I still wonder if the article belongs to this journal, as long as the research targets materials, even if they are green.

The main question is: which will be the impact on the environment? How sustainable are these materials? How will be the architects pursued to promote them? Which is the material guarantee in time? Just think of polystyrene that was perfect 20 years ago and today the architects and engineers avoid to use it.
