Isolation of Alginate-Degrading Bacteria from the Human Gut Microbiota and Discovery of Bacteroides xylanisolvens AY11-1 as a Novel Anti-Colitis Probiotic Bacterium
Highlights
- Among the bacteria tested, B. xylanisolvens AY11-1 was a potent alginate-degrader in the human gut microbiota.
- Degradation and fermentation of alginates by B. xylanisolvens AY11-1 produced oligosaccharides and short-chain fatty acids.
- B. xylanisolvens AY11-1 alleviated dextran sulfate sodium-induced colitis and improved gut dysbiosis.
- B. xylanisolvens AY11-1 showed no oral toxicity and was well tolerated in male and female mice.
- B. xylanisolvens AY11-1 could be used as a next-generation probiotic bacterium for the treatment of colitis.
