Coeliac Disease and Microscopic Colitis: The Largest Study Assessing Prognosis and Risk of Hospital Admission
Highlights
- A flare of microscopic colitis led to hospitalisation in 6.4% of patients.
- Prior to admission, only 7% of patients were diagnosed with microscopic colitis, despite 22.8% having had at least 1 previous colonoscopy.
- Coeliac disease is more common in patients with microscopic colitis compared to the general population and is diagnosed on average 7 years earlier than microscopic colitis.
- Microscopic colitis should be considered in hospitalised patients presenting with common gastrointestinal symptoms.
- There may be a missed opportunity to diagnose patients with microscopic colitis who present with diarrhoea and undergo a colonoscopy.
- All patients with coeliac disease who have persisting symptoms despite adhering to a gluten-free diet should be tested for microscopic colitis.
