V2O5/Carbon Nanotube/Polypyrrole Based Freestanding Negative Electrodes for High-Performance Supercapacitors
Round 1
Reviewer 1 Report
This manuscript by Jyotibasu and coworkers describes capacitive properties of composite vanadium oxide/CNT/polypyrrole materials. The methods used could be an unusual take on the preparation of such materials but the result and consequent discussions are similar to other composites intended for use as capacitor materials. Presentation is reasonable and characterization is just about sufficient with TEM or HRTEM being absent.
As usual with these papers, it is very difficult to appreciate the importance of the metrics without a direct comparison with other work in the area of these materials. Therefore, I suggest that the authors include a sufficiently comprehensive table summarizing current status of the field including relevant data/parameters in order to emphasize the importance of their approach. The values seem high, but with no comparison it is difficult especially for the non-specialist to appreciate this. Such a table could be included in the main Ms or added in the supporting materials and referred to from the main Ms.
Although citation seems reasonable, several recent examples of the important work in this area by L. K. Shrestha or Y. Yamauchi ought to be cited in the introduction.

In the presented work, vanadium pentoxide, functionalized carbon nanotubes and PPy based composites film was prepared. The composite based electrode can effectively mitigate the drawbacks of the low specific capacitance of nanotubes and the poor cyclic life of V2O5. The manuscript contains useful results and it is worth for publication after minor correction.
- The interaction of V2O5 with carbon nanotubes was investigated previously. Please mention in the Introduction and in the discussion of the results (Appl. Catal A General 260 (2004) 55-61).
- V+5 and V4+ can be distinguished by XPS. Is it possible that the satellite of O1s influence the base line and so it should be taken into account in the deconvolution processes?
- Is there any information for vanadium carbide formation?
