Variations in Maximum and Minimum Temperature in Mount Qomolangma during 1971–2020
Round 1

Comments and Suggestions for Authors1. The author should provide a stronger justification for the study. It says: “(Line 84) there is little research on the variation of maximum and minimum temperature in MQ up to now”. So what if we know the variation of maximum and minimum temperature in MQ? Why the study of variation of maximum and minimum temperature in MQ is important? Furthermore, why does the author focus on MQ, but not the whole Himalayas area?
2. This study examines the data collected from 2 weather stations. However, 2 stations may not be sufficient to provide reliable data for scientific research because of the natural variation and the local environmental conditions.
3. There are many methods for the study of the variation of temperature in MQ, and Mann-Kendall (MK) test linear trend is one of these methods. The author should explain why this method is better than the other methods in studying the variation of maximum and minimum temperature in MQ. Although MK test has many advantages, it has many drawbacks. First, it primarily focuses on monotonic trends, meaning that it may be problematic if the trend is cyclical or with multiple turning points. Second, MK test only indicates the presence or absence of a trend, not its strength or magnitude.
4. There is no Discussion in this manuscript. The present form of the manuscript is not an academic article but a data report. The author must interpret the meaning of the results and compare this study with relevant studies.
5. The author should discuss the theoretical and practical implications of this study.
6. The author should describe the limitations of this study and recommendations for future studies.
7. Figure 1 in this manuscript had been published in Wang 2004 (https://doi.org/10.1007/s11629-023-8297-x). The author must check whether he holds the copyright of the figure.

Comments and Suggestions for AuthorsThe article “Variations of Maximum and Minimum Temperature in the Mount Qomolangma during 1971-2020” analyzed the max and min temperature over Mount Qomolangma using two stations data spanning a period of 50 years. The analysis is pre-dominantly based on trend detection method for monthly, seasonal, and annual means showing the trends and the abrupt changes during the period. The temperature analysis over mountains (especially Tibetan plateau) is paramount as these regions are more prone to climate change, and the observed data availability over mountains are scarce.
The article is written nicely, well-presented and has potential, but it lacks novelty and do not have any new methodologies or results except the region of interest. The analysis is simple and can be utilized for reporting purposes. It can be accepted considering the region but not on the merit of scientific study.
Minor Comment:
The author has reported the abrupt change years using the MK trend test, but I am not confident whether the MK test provides abrupt year change. As per my search Mann-Kendall-Sneyers test provides the change point detection or others like Pettit test. Authors should discuss and confirm the method for the change point detection. Also, they should mention whether the abrupt change years are statistically significant or not.
