Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The actual topic of the paper. Excellent work, the research was carried out at a high level, the results obtained have scientific and practical value.

Reviewer 2 Report

The authors studied the effects of heat treatment and diamond burnishing on fatigue behavior and corrosion resistance of AISI 304 austenitic stainless steel. The manuscript had an interesting topic and was well-written, however it could only be accepted with the following minor revisions:

1.    Figure 1(a) “Stress-strain diagram and geometry of the specimens: a. nominal stress-nominal strain diagram” and Table 2 “Main mechanical properties at room temperature of the studied AISI 304 steel (initial state)” were recommended to be placed in Section 3 - Result and Discussion.

2.    It is suggested to provide a flow chart for the experimental setup and it can be placed under the Materials and Methods Section.

3.    Refer to Equation 1, please avoid putting the unit in the formula or equation (the same goes for Equation 2).

4.    In Figure 19, there was no standard deviation associated to the graph.

5.    The author was writing a good discussion but was very poor in citing the previous studies to compare with the result of the present study (must be improved).

6.    The conclusion could be improved by adding the limitation, future study, and implications for researchers.

Reviewer 3 Report

The article is interesting and covers a huge volume of research. It is useful for choosing a method of processing stainless steel parts depending on the operational purpose of the part.

The material is presented consistently, well-argued, and experimentally confirmed. I recommend the article be printed. I have no comments for the authors.

Reviewer 4 Report

1. On lines 224-226, the reference [17] and subsequent relevant content should be described in detail. The experimental parameter hardening DB n=3 should be added in the manuscript.

2. On lines 392-394, the sentence DB significantly increases the density of dislocation in the surface layer” lack evidence, which can not be seen in the figure.

3. On lines 530-536, authors insisted that heat treatment after hardening single-pass DB does not significantly change the fatigue strength, however, what is the reason for that?
