Radical Succession: Hagiography, Reform, and Franciscan Identity in the Convent of the Abbess Juana de la Cruz (1481–1534)
Round 1
Reviewer 1 Report
This is a truly excellent paper. It is very well written throughout, rigorously researched, completely on top of the secondary literature in both English and Spanish.
The article presents a compelling and clear narrative, and one that is both easy to follow and entertaining to read for the specialist and for the curious scholar.

Reviewer 2 Report
This is a key and excellent article to get to know Juana de la Cruz’s significance better. It is rigorously written by a great connoisseur of the texts, and it constitutes a thorough research which brings about a very relevant contribution to the field of female mystic of the first half of the Spanish 16th century.
Observations:
The author's name before the surname in note 2 should be added: “María del Mar” Graña Cid. The inconsistency of citing Graña (n. 3) or Graña Cid should also be corrected.
In p. 3, the roman numeral XIII in Zarri’s quote should be lowercase.
In p. 4 it should be clarified that Navarro's book was first published in 1622 and that a later edition is being quoted (by the way, there is no translation of the quotation, which appears in italics). Neither is translated the quotation in n. 17 and 18.
The entry to Muñoz Fernández in n. 3 does not appear in the bibliography: it should appear there or either can be deleted from the note since it is a too panoramic work (though a good review) for the matter in question.
In p. 6, please consider removing the comma after “bocaçión".
The italics should be consistent (sometimes the quotations in Spanish are written in italics and sometimes not), e. g., consider removal of italics from the Spanish citation in p. 17.
In the indented quotation of p. 8 there is a line break that should be corrected and the page reference of Boon’s translation and quotation (bellow) is missing.
In n. 21 the reference (quote from Capua) is missing.
In p. 13 the first quotation should be indented.
Check quotation marks on pp. 8, 14, 16. Remove them in the indented citation in p. 15 to be consistent.
Please, correct the words’ repetition in n. 36; also in this note, Libro de la casa must be italicized.
The double space in n. 10 must be corrected.
The edition of Luengo Balbás and Atencia Requena dates from 2019 and Curto’s is from 2018 (although both were modified in 2020).
Giving the references of the manuscripts of the Libro del Conhorte and Libro de la casa is recommended. Especially the latter since there are quotations with its foliation in n. 17, pp. 7, 14.
Recommend bibliography: for the concepts of conventual memory and a community’s chronicle, I would recommend to add this reference: the book edited by Zarri & Baranda, Memoria e comunità femminili. Spagna e Italia, secc. XV-XVII (Firenze UP/ UNED, 2011).
