Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

This study is interesting and well-designed. The authors approached a highly relevant subject and proved their hypothesis using an adequate experimental design and robust methods. The results are promising and sound with the objectives. I am impressed by the novelty of this study. I have a few concerns and suggestions to improve the document:

1) The lack of proper statistical evaluation of some sets of results is a limitation of the study. Processing the data would reinforce the discussions.

2) The authors could provide a figure summarizing their main findings.

3) A paragraph describing the limitations of the study and the future perspectives in the field could be included.

Reviewer 2 Report

The manuscript has been well prepared but needs a minor revision. 1. In the abstract and conclusions, please add parameters to support the oppions. 2. The linear graphs are not clear and the resolutions need to be enhanced. 3. In the introduction, please add more works of surfacant materials activated by using laser. 4. Please polish the manuscript before next submission.

Reviewer 3 Report

Furukawa et al. have reported on the use of laser to fabricate a Medical-grade ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene. This manuscript is well-organized and could be of an interest to a broad range of readers of this journal. However, there are a few issues that need to be addressed before suggesting for publication.

-          The introduction needs to be revised and more example on the use of laser-matter interaction and their effect on properties like biocompatibility should be included such as doi.org/10.1038/srep35425

-          Providing additional characterizations such as AFM and XRD would be beneficial.

-          Did the author investigate different coating thickness, if not why?

-          Has the author consider applying different laser parameter such as scanning speed, laser power etc?

-          The nominal thickness of the coating after laser irradiation should be reported.
