Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The authors investigated the latest applications of remote sensing in coastal and marine conservation using a hierarchical cluster analysis. The main findings are very interesting and results have high value for practical conservation applications. The content and logic of the article are quite clear.

Reviewer 2 Report

The paper presents an interesting overview of the trends in research about remote sensing applied to marine conservation, by automated analysis of 427 papers containing selected keywords. The paper is well written, clear and well argumented.

However, a few minor issues could be fixed to improve readability and clarity.

Specific comments:

My suggestion is to avoid the use of acronyms in the abstract.

Fig. 2, 3, 4 appear a little unbalanced. The central part with the horizontal lines seems too large, and both tree structure on the right and the histogram on the left result too small for easy lecture. My suggestion is to expand these panels and reduce the center. Scale on the histograms could also improve the effectiveness of the figures.

line 467: no need to define EU since it is not used in the following

line 468: same for MFSD

Reviewer 3 Report

The present manuscript describes an interesting present trends and Applications of Remote Sensing in Coastal and Marine Conservation. According to the present reviewer, the manuscript in its present form, it is too short and there is a general lack of crucial information that must be declared after gooing ahead. Therefore, if the suggestions will be followed I will recommend this paper for the publication on MDPI Earth. Before this last point, the manuscript must be improved to deserve the quality of the present journal. Here below are reported some useful suggestions that should be done before going ahead.

Firstly i suggest you to present the manuscript as review and not article.

In the introduction section i suggest you to talk also about marine and land conservation related also to climate change here is some useful articles that can ben put:

  • El Mahrad, B., Newton, A., Icely, J. D., Kacimi, I., Abalansa, S., & Snoussi, M. (2020). Contribution of remote sensing technologies to a holistic coastal and marine environmental management framework: A review. Remote Sensing12(14), 2313.
  • Wang, Yeqiao, et al. "Remote sensing applications in monitoring of protected areas." Remote Sensing 12.9 (2020): 1370.
  • Orusa, Tommaso, and Enrico Borgogno Mondino. "Exploring Short-term climate change effects on rangelands and broad-leaved forests by free satellite data in Aosta Valley (Northwest Italy)." Climate 9.3 (2021): 47.

Methods and Material are too short I suggest you to divede them in two parts and better describe what collection and data were adopted which software and tools and the input parameters to perform the analysis and realize a systematic literature review of all the works concerning your topic.

Analysis and conclusions must be improved and they are too short at this time.
