Feature Papers in Compounds (2022–2023)

1. Introduction and Scope

Compounds was born in 2021 as an interdisciplinary journal with a clear vocation towards the scientific community and a tool to present its scientific achievements in an open access format that would allow a rapid and efficient dissemination of its scientific results in the field of chemistry [1].
At that time, a Special Issue was launched under the title “Feature Papers in Compounds” with the aim of forming a collection of high-quality articles published in open access format [2]. This Special Issue included 15 papers (1 editorial, 2 communications, 8 regular articles and 4 review articles) that accumulated over time 92 citations and 56,547 views—which means an average of 6.1 citations per article and 3770 views per article. In addition, this Special Issue gave rise to a printed edition published in 2022.
After this, and with the same goals, “Feature Papers in Compounds (2022–2023)” was presented, also with the objective of presenting a selection of high-quality papers by the Editorial Board Members, and authors invited by the Editorial Office and the Editor-in-Chief [3].

2. Contributions

This Special Issue is composed of 27 manuscripts, of which 6 are review articles, 18 are research articles and 3 are communications. The variety in the topics addressed by the authors constitutes evidence that we are managing to consolidate the interdisciplinary spirit that a journal like Compounds should present. Figure 1 shows the word cloud for terms appearing in the Special Issue contributions.
These contributions cover a variety of topics, from chemical analysis and syntheses to bioconjugation reactions or thermoelectric properties. Thus, eight publications address topics related to chemical analysis and synthesis; six deal with biomedical research, medicinal chemistry, and pharmaceutical sciences (one of them even addresses aspects related to traditional Chinese medicine). There are other five contributions along the topics related to materials science and engineering, one on crystallography and structure of the matter, and another related to kinetics and catalysis. In addition, we must consider one contribution related to natural products and another two papers whose topic is food chemistry and nutrition. Finally, we must highlight three contributions related to computational chemistry and molecular modelling.
Table 1 shows the contributions that make up this Special Issue grouped according to their topic.
The set of articles that constitute this Special Issue is also proof of the internationalization of Compounds, as proven by the wide variety of countries represented by the contributors: 21 countries from with 52.4% from Europe, 9.5% from America, 14.3% from Africa and 23.8% from Asia. Figure 2 shows the distribution by country of these publications.
In terms of participation, the success of this Special Issue comes along the achievement of two major milestones within the editorial objectives of Compounds, the inclusion of our journal in Scopus (Elsevier) and its indexation in the Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI) from Web of Science (Clarivate Analytics), which implies that our journal is tracked for Impact Factor in Journal Citation Reports (Clarivate Analytics). All of this guarantees much greater visibility for the contributions of the authors who have decided to trust Compounds as a tool for the dissemination of their academic results.

3. Conclusions and Outlook

In conclusion, we are proud that this Special Issue constitutes an interesting compilation of contributions that display the thematic transversality of Compounds and its interdisciplinary nature in the field of pure and applied chemistry. The success of this second volume of Feature Papers in Compounds—Feature Papers in Compounds (2022–2023)—encourages us to face the challenge of a new Special Issue that will constitute the third volume of Feature Papers under the title “Feature Papers in Compounds (2024)” [4], in which we expect to incorporate new and valuable contributions of interest to Compounds readers.
Finally, we also take this opportunity to invite the entire scientific community to trust our Journal as an Open Access platform to publicize their work, so that the submission of regular articles, communications or review articles are welcomed.
