Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Photoelectrochemical cells (PEC) for solar water splitting and green hydrogen production has been one of the most promising routes to answer the climate crises while answering renewable energy source demands.

Several materials have been intensively investigated, eager to find the ideal material and/or fabrication method by combining several key requirements: efficiency, non-toxic, abundant/low-cost, stability, scalability. abundant/low cost and chemically stable,

Nano-structuring with different shapes and morphologies have been strongly explored for the PEC applications and could be considered the game-changing feature for the solar-driven water splitting. By engineering the morphology, size, and dimensionality of the system it is possible to modify the electronic and optical properties and thus be possible to enhance the photocatalytic activity of the materials.

Novel nanomaterials with large surface area architecture have been intensively explored in the past recent years, however, this field faces a continuous progression demanding further improvements. Besides, several approaches like defect control, porous, doping, heterostructures, plasmonic, co-catalyst modification, graphene bases assist are worthy strategies that can be combined with nanomaterials and increase the output photo-performances.

This Special Issue of Applied Sciences, “Novel Nanomaterials for Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting”, is intended for a wide and interdisciplinary audience, and covers recent advances in:

  • novel and advanced nanomaterials/materials
  • nanoarchitectures and heterojunctions strategies
  • 2D materials more recently implemented
  • Development of new nanomaterials/materials fabrication techniques
  • improved characterization methods and theoretical modelling
  • optimization of the stability tests
  • innovative concepts to increase PEC-based device performance and to reduce costs
