Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

In recent decades, there has been a lot of research on and development in the innovative structures used in marine, offshore, and onshore wind energy applications.

This interest is linked to the development of ocean renewables, which includes wind energy solutions proposed for the ongoing energy transition to a net-zero carbon future. Very often, the structures used in these highly innovative, technological concepts are highly novel due to their high performance and low cost, as they deviate away from the traditional structures used in wind energy.

Some examples include large floating wind turbines, onshore wind energy installations, and environmental loading.  Achieving a good balance between the safety and reliability of innovative structures is essential for realizing the target economic benefits; this balance requires an optimal design of the critical structures and components. In order to produce the optimal structure design, we must gain a deeper insight into the structure dynamics. Modeling and analysis are essential for adequately understanding the dynamic, nonlinear, and environmental load effects experienced by these innovative structures in both onshore and offshore environments. This is crucial for their effective and optimal design, operation, and maintenance. In this context, this Research Topic invites original scientific contributions and review articles regarding broad aspects of the design, modeling, analysis, and reliability of innovative structures used for marine, offshore, and wind energy applications. Various topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Atmospheric modelling and simulation;
  • Nonlinear dynamic responses;
  • Environmental stochastic loads and responses;
  • Coupled nonlinear methods and analysis;
  • Novel conceptual studies;
  • Substructure design and analysis;
  • Innovative ocean renewable energy concepts;
  • Numerical and experimental analysis;
  • Machine learning and digital twins.
