Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
It is estimated that people spend 85-90% of their time in indoor environments, such as homes, offices, and schools, among others. Moreover, the World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 99% of the world population is exposed to hazardous levels of air quality. Thus, it becomes increasingly important to understand how indoor air quality (IAQ) impacts lives and how to improve it for cleaner and healthier air. Currently, with the advances of low-cost sensing technologies, Internet of Things (IoT), Big Data, artificial intelligence (AI), computational modeling, smart solutions, and nature-based approaches/ideas/solutions are being researched and developed to help tackle the challenge of assessing and improving the IAQ of buildings and homes.
Given this context, this Special Issue seeks to find high-quality and original research articles that present new insights, approaches, ideas, and solutions that aim to assess and solve or mitigate air quality issues in smart building indoor environments. We seek works covering a range of research topics, including but not limited to:
- Smart homes and buildings design to improve indoor air quality;
- Low-cost sensing and IoT technologies to increase indoor air quality monitoring;
- Analysis and modeling of the influence of outdoor air pollution in indoor air quality;
- Impacts of indoor air quality in human health;
- Indoor air quality modeling;
- Smart solutions for improving indoor air quality;
- Physics-based and AI-driven approaches to model and assess indoor air quality;
- Airborne dispersion of contaminants and their impact in indoor environments;
- High-resolution regional air quality modeling using computational modeling or machine learning for indoor air quality estimation of urban and rural areas;
- Nature-based ideas and solutions to improve indoor air quality;
- Other related sub-areas in this research context.

For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Atmosphere is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
