Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

With the development of nanomaterials and sensing technology, hydrogel-based biosensors have attracted considerable attention due to their various advantages over conventional detection systems. Their excellent physicochemical properties, such as variable wettability, high biocompatibility, richness in functional groups, easy engineering, and tunable mechanical characteristics, offer substantial improvement for the design of novel sensing systems for the diagnosis of cells, microorganisms, tissues, organoids, bloods, and whole bodies.

This Special Issue aims to consolidate recent advancements in hydrogel-based biosensors, focusing on their design, fabrication, and diverse applications in various fields such as healthcare, organoids, biopharmaceuticals, tumor treatment, nutrients, environmental monitoring, and food safety. We welcome submissions on, but are not limited to, the following topics:

  • Novel designs or strategies for hydrogel-based biosensors, including the immobilization of bioreceptors, biosignal transducing strategies, etc.
  • New applications for hydrogel-based biosensors: clinical diagnostics for biomarkers and metabolites, drug sensing, environmental pollutant detection, etc.
  • Hydrogel-based biosensors loaded with proteins, aptamers, antibodies/antigens, and DNA/RNA for cell, bacteria, fungi, and organoid sensing and detection.
  • Incorporation of nanomaterials such as noble metals, upconversion materials, quantum dots, and conjugated organic structures into hydrogel biosensors to enhance sensitivity and specificity.

Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Biosensors is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
