Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Mental illness has consistently been identified as a major public health concern globally, affecting individuals across disparate domains of function (e.g., communication, social interaction, self-management, learning, self-care). The foregoing functional deficits result in mental illnesses being identified as one of the leading causes of disability worldwide. Notwithstanding the foregoing replicable data demonstrating the urgent need for advances in treatment for mental illness, the clarion call for hypothesis-driven treatments for mental illness has remained limited to date. However, recent advancements in medicine have incited a movement toward hypothesis-driven psychotherapeutic/psychopharmacologic treatments for disparate mental illnesses, increasing interest in this space toward mitigating the extent, duration, and/or debilitating impact of mental illness on overall functional capacity.

The overarching aim of this Special Issue is to highlight and provide up-to-date information on available, novel, and hypothesis-driven treatments for mental illness. The scope of this Special Issue is broad and aims to highlight the importance of mental health to overall health outcomes and feature the ongoing and urgent need for novel, available, and hypothesis-driven, treatments, as well as underscoring available updates in treatment options.
