Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Buildings is devoting a Special Issue to the role that housing energy efficiency plays in the real estate market and urban transformation. Governments around the world are being called upon to promote the energy efficiency of buildings and reduce greenhouse gas emissions to zero in the construction sector. This Special Issue aims to explore the role of sustainable building practices in lowering emissions in light of global building standards. In addition, this Special Issue aims to examine how urban planning policies can foster the creation of more sustainable communities through the design of eco-friendly neighborhoods. Through interdisciplinary analysis, this issue aims to highlight the importance of an integrated approach involving developers, urban planners, governments, and local communities to promote the transition to a more energy-efficient and sustainable built environment.

Research areas of interest include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Reducing carbon emissions: identifying best practices and technologies to improve the energy efficiency of buildings, thus contributing to the fight against climate change;
  • Economic savings: improving the energy efficiency of buildings can lead to long-term economic savings for both owners and tenants. This can influence real estate market dynamics, including supply, demand, pricing mechanisms, and neighborhood dynamics;
  • Sustainable growth: developing models and decision-making tools to guide this transition to more energy-efficient and sustainable cities;
  • Policy improvement: evaluation of policy frameworks, regulatory measures, and financing mechanisms to support energy performance housing initiatives and their integration into broader urban development strategies;
  • Benefits for health and well-being: exploring the links between the energy efficiency of buildings and occupant well-being, thus helping to promote public health and comfort for building users.

We welcome original research articles, review papers, case studies, and conceptual frameworks.

By fostering interdisciplinary dialogue and knowledge exchange, this Special Issue endeavors to advance scientific understanding and inform actionable strategies for addressing contemporary housing challenges and fostering more sustainable and resilient urban futures.

We look forward to receiving valuable contributions to this Special Issue.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Buildings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
