Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The advancement of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in the agricultural sector is opening up new opportunities to encourage the adoption of sustainable agricultural practices and resource use by providing more timely and low-cost information services to farmers, as well as assisting private and public agencies in coordinating agricultural agents. The potential benefits brought about by the use of ICTs in agriculture are particularly relevant for the management of water resources at different operational levels. Regional environmental agencies, local water authorities, advisory services and farmers are thought to be the first recipients of such instruments. The sweeping progress in the development of monitoring devices (field and plant sensors, meteorological information) and forecasting tools is contributing to increasing the reliability of the information needed to support the ordinary management of water resources and to protect against extreme weather events. This is accompanied by an improvement in data acquisition through decision support systems (DSS), increasing the ease of use of such technologies. As a consequence, the technological advancement of the digitalization of water management is knocking down knowledge and skill barriers to managing large bodies of information and complex equipment, allowing the use of such technologies by an increasing number of potential beneficiaries and changing information power relationships, with direct effects on governance.

This Special Issue of Digital calls for contributions on this subject, including review articles about the state of the art in the use of ICTs for the management of water resources in agriculture, highlighting limits and opportunities; evidence related to the use of ICTs for the management of water resources in agriculture at the case study level, highlighting positive/negative socioeconomic and environmental implications; and theoretical analysis about the implications of possible changes in the information environment brought about by the introduction of ICTs to the governance of water resources in agriculture. Contributions in the fields of law, economics and sociology are also welcome.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Digital is an international peer-reviewed open access quarterly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 1000 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • e-Book format: Special Issues with more than 10 articles can be published as dedicated e-books, ensuring wide and rapid dissemination.
