Image Processing and Satellite Imagery Analysis in Environments II

Dear Colleagues,

Environmental studies are broadening from the small scale of local environments up to a global scale and beyond. To understand the evolution of the life on Earth and, in particular, to recognize how the human activities affect life and vice versa, we need to collect and analyze data concerning the vastly complex system of life on our planet. Small-scale environments are subjected to a variety of global changes and direct human actions at a local level. The extent of these local problems, which can be caused by climate change for instance, needs to be carefully considered in order to prevent any possible risks. Concurrently, human activities need to be planned to reduce both local and global effects. All of these studies and consequent human actions require data and models.

One of the tools that we have at our disposal to receive information for environmental studies is satellite technology. Remote sensing satellites are specifically designed for the observation of our planet from orbit and are essentially intended for environmental monitoring and meteorology, as well as map making. In environmental monitoring, the satellites provide us with information by means of a remote detection of any change on the Earth's surface, including changes in temperature; rainfall; vegetation; the state of lakes, seas and oceans; the state of the surface of ice fields, and so on. By recording vegetation changes, for instance, the health of vegetation can be measured, and the suffering caused by droughts can be monitored.

The Special Issue of Geosciences, entitled “Image Processing and Satellite Imagery Analysis in Environments", is proposed here to stress the role of satellites in the analysis and monitoring of environments. However, satellite imagery needs to be processed in order to extract data. Many methods and algorithms exist, and many can be developed, to properly enhance and extract information from satellite maps in different ranges of frequencies, recorded at different scales, and from both local and global environments.

Below are some suggestions of topics that are suitable for inclusion in this Special Issue, although please note that many more could be added to this list:

• Satellite imagery and the monitoring of polar ice and glaciers;
• Coastline erosion and deposition;
• Internal waves in oceans and atmospheres;
• Sand dunes and their motion seen from space
