Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Tourism is a highly competitive market. For example, accommodation and airline companies have one of the lowest profit rates of any industry (Porter, 2009). At the same time, super-star companies like OTAs have enormous profits. Even within narrowly defined tourism industries, the distribution of performance among tourism enterprises is very uneven, with few companies being very profitable and a large number of companies making no profits at all. In the meantime, sharing has increased the level of competition, especially in urban areas. As a response, governments have introduced regulations on short-term rentals. Despite the high level of competition, many tourism enterprises cooperate within destinations and establish alliances (referred to as coopetition). The increased availability of firm and established data from national statistical offices, balance sheets and profits and loss accounts, as well as data from short-term rentals make it possible to measure the degree of competition in tourism markets and measure the effects on performance.

Therefore, potential topics for this Special Issue include but are not limited to the following:

  • What is the best way to measure competition in the tourism industry (price-cost margin, Herfindahl index, number of competitors, Boone measurement)?
  • How has the degree of competition changed over time?
  • What is the relationship between the degree of competitiveness in the tourism market and performance?
  • What is the impact of cooperation and coopetition on the performance of tourism enterprises?
  • What is the impact of short-term online rentals on the performance of the traditional accommodation industries?
  • What are the characteristics of destinations introducing regulations?

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Journal of Risk and Financial Management is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
