Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The latest agreements from the 28th Conference of the Parties focus on reducing fossil fuel consumption and greenhouse gas releases. With these goals in mind, electric drives can be considered as an extended solution to reduce energy consumption, with a notable decrease in emissions. This trend promotes the adoption of electric drives in green energy generation and electric mobility. However, this expanded role necessitates the development of more competitive electric drives to meet the increasingly stringent requirements of industrial applications. In this regard, the use of multiphase technology or axial flux motors has been explored in a successful manner when higher requirements are expected, providing a considerable progress in motor drive performance. On the one hand, multiphase electric drives offer certain advantages over conventional three-phase systems. For instance, the implementation of multiphase technology permits a higher fault tolerance, a better current distribution for the same level of power/voltage, as well as the existence of a higher number of operating modes. On the other hand, axial flux machines exhibit a significant increase in the weight/power ratio, delivering satisfactory performance in applications where weight is a crucial factor, such as in electric mobility. In addition, the beneficial features of these technologies can be further enhanced when combined with the use of semiconductors based on SiC or GaN switches.

Considering the previous information, this Special Issue aims to provide an insight into the state of the art of more competitive electric drives based on multiphase systems, axial flux motors, or the new generation of semiconductors. By exploring these cutting-edge innovations, this issue aims to shed light on the recent progress in electrical machines and motor drives.

Prospective authors are encouraged to submit original research and survey papers for consideration in this Special Issue. The topics of interest may include, among others, the following:

- The control of multiphase electric drives.
- The design of multiphase machines.
- Fault tolerance in multiphase machines.
- Model predictive control for multiphase electric systems.
- Model free predictive control for multiphase electric systems.
- The integration of axial flux machines in electrical vehicles.
- The control of axial flux machines.
- The design of axial flux motors.
- Modeling axial flux machines.
- The impact of SiC/GaN switches on electric drives.
- Voltage source converters based on SiC/GaN switches.
- The design of modulation stages for SiC/GaN switches.
