Dear Colleagues,
The convergence of 3D bioprinting and marine biomaterials is ushering in a new era of innovation in biomedical technologies. The unique properties of marine-derived materials such as alginate, chitosan, and other marine biopolymers have positioned them at the forefront of this technological revolution. These materials offer unparalleled biocompatibility, biodegradability, and bioactivity, making them ideal candidates for a wide array of biomedical applications including bioengineered tissue/organ analogs for tissue regeneration and the interpretation of pathogenesis (e.g., artificial tissue/organ, organ-on-a-chip), intelligent drug delivery systems (e.g., microneedles, micro/nano-biorobots), and diagnostic/therapeutic devices (e.g., biosensors, tissue adhesives).
While significant progress has been made using terrestrial biomaterials, there is growing recognition of the vast, untapped potential of marine biomaterials in addressing the challenges currently present in bioengineering. The advanced properties of these materials can significantly enhance the precision, functionality, and scalability of 3D bioprinted constructs, propelling innovations in regenerative and personalized medicine. Moreover, the ability of marine materials to integrate seamlessly with cutting-edge 3D printing technologies offers new possibilities for creating multifunctional biomedical devices and systems.
This Special Issue aims to highlight the groundbreaking research that is currently leveraging marine biomaterials in the expanding field of 3D bioprinting. We encourage the submission of articles that explore novel marine-derived biomaterials, advanced bioprinting techniques, and innovative applications across a broad spectrum of biomedical fields. Contributions that address the challenges of material synthesis and formulation, biomimetic/biofunctional structure reconstruction, the improvement of biomedical performance, and clinical translation are particularly welcome. By collecting interdisciplinary research, this Special Issue seeks to advance our understanding of how marine biomaterials could guide the future of biomedical technology and therapeutic development.

All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Marine Drugs is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
