Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

In membrane processes, cost, performance, and quality are affected by membrane fouling. Membrane technology is widely employed in a variety of industries, including wastewater treatment, desalination, bioseparation, gas separation, and fuel cell applications. Transport phenomena are quite complex in membrane processes, and a mechanistic model requires comprehensive knowledge regarding the intrinsic properties of membranes and feed characteristics. For instance, in liquid separation, fouling and concentration polarization worsen the performance and lifecycle of a membrane. To overcome this limitation and other issues in membrane-based applications, black box modeling is deployed for the optimization of the hydrodynamic condition to improve the filtration performance and scale-up.

Recently, artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) have been widely used in the optimization of multivariate systems under various domains. AI and ML are commonly applied to evaluate membrane performance characteristics, such as the prediction of flux and rejection, water recovery, energy consumption, membrane fouling, and gas selectivity. Such techniques would be beneficial to researchers and industrialists in terms of improving performance and better understanding the governance of systems.

This Special Issue on “Machine Learning in Membrane Separation Processes” invites articles on recent advancements in AI, ML tools, and hybrid modeling systems for membrane-based liquid, gas, and fuel cell applications. This includes studies on modeling and simulation in microfiltration (MF), ultrafiltration (UF), nanofiltration (NF), reverse osmosis (RO), forward osmosis (FO), membrane bioreactor (MBR), electrodialysis (ED), gas separation (GS), etc. The main aspects, including computer simulation and artificial intelligence related to membrane performance as well as experimental evaluations, are covered. As Guest Editors, we cordially invite you to submit a manuscript for publication in this Special Issue of the journal Membranes. Authors are invited to submit recent results in the form of either research papers or critical reviews of the state of the art.
