Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Ruminant production plays a crucial role in agricultural systems and contributes significantly to human nutrition. Ruminants have the unique ability to convert vast renewable resources from rangeland, pasture, and crop residues or by-products that are inedible to humans into high-quality foods like meat and milk. In recent decades, consumers have increasingly demanded improvements in food quality, focusing on nutritional properties and sensorial traits, together with better animal welfare and environmental friendliness. This demand has since driven the research and industry efforts to find solutions for improving the productivity, sustainability, and quality of these products, increasing profitability for the sector and farmers.

Under this context, studies focusing on deeply understanding ruminant metabolism and biological bases using systems biology approaches have gained more attention, especially the ones aiming to better understand, control, and predict traits related to ruminant production. Omics tools, particularly metabolomics, are effective for evaluating altered ruminant metabolism through changes in management strategies, including production systems and nutrition.

Increasing evidence has shown the importance of metabolic changes in ruminants regarding feed strategies and production systems. A better understanding of the molecular factors that affect the metabolism of these animals can significantly help achieve the new goals of producing high-quality animal-sourced foods to meet the growing demand of the human population. This Special Issue of Metabolites will seek to expand knowledge centered around metabolic changes in ruminants in response to nutritional strategies and production systems. We invite original research articles, brief research reports, and reviews covering (but not limited to) ruminant nutrition and production through omics studies, including metabolic profiling, biomarker discovery, target and untargeted omics, omics networking, multi-omics, and other systems biology approaches.

All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Metabolites is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
