Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The ever-increasing need for high performance components is constantly pushing the complexity of the mechanical design and components. This need has been largely addressed by the development of additive manufacturing (AM) technologies. While the development of new processes and materials for AM is progressing very rapidly and AM applications are reaching an unprecedented levels in both academia and industry, design strategies for additive manufacturing and structural optimization are lagging behind. In order to fully utilize the advantages of AM and successfully shape the future of this technolgy, product development, design, and structural optimization must be adapted to these new processes. All-inclusive approaches for structural optimization using lightweight strategies such as topology optimization and/or latticing are needed. These approaches reduce the volume in the unloaded regions, enable reductions in the component mass, limit the maximum stress, and consider the restrictions and characteristics as well as the economical and isotropic/anisotropic property considerations of the AM process.
This Special Issue of Metals focuses on Structural Design and Optimization of Additive Manufacturing Technology and its influence on the final products performance and economy. It also outlines the fundamental development trends and most recent advances in the field. We would like to invite all researchers and authorities in this field to contribute their latest research on the subjest. Review artilces are also welcome.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Metals is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
