Dear Colleagues,
Genomics is the most rapidly growing discipline in science because of, in recent years, an exponential increase in the submission of whole genome sequences in public databases. Whole genome sequencing-based characterization of prokaryotes offers an important opportunity for the detection and discovery of microbial pathogens, human infections, development of specific diagnostic assays and vaccines, antimicrobial target identification and drug designing. Without any question, rapid advances are needed to meet the constant demand to develop sophisticated sequencing technology capable of producing several hundred pieces of prokaryotic genomic data very quickly and cheaply in each year. These data provide novel insights into the biology and evolution of each of these species. Genomic and metagenomic analysis is most likely to be used for the detection and characterization of microbial species and to better understand the culturable and unculturable microbial world around us. The most important issues in microbial genomics are to predict the function of gene products and understand the activities of microbial and viral community from their sequences and to use genomic data to develop improved tools for managing infectious disease. This research topic welcomes contributions in the following areas:
- Genomics in terrestrial and aquatic environments
- The human microbiome and metagenomics, metatranscriptomic or metaproteomic studies
- Host–microbe interactions and symbiotic interactions
- Therapeutic and drug designing
- Genomics in Industrial microbiology
- Bioremediation and environmental biotechnology

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process.
