Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Cancer is a leading cause of mortality worldwide, significantly impacting the global population each year. Researchers continue to explore novel therapies for cancer treatment and prevention. Although chemotherapy and radiotherapy are often effective in combating cancer, they are associated with numerous adverse side effects. Anticancer drugs are highly toxic not only to cancer cells but also to healthy cells. In contrast, plant specialized metabolites and plant extracts may exhibit potential anticancer properties, by altering redox status and interfering with key cellular processes such as the cell cycle, apoptosis, and metastasis. Additionally, these compounds may induce non-apoptotic cell death mechanisms, including the regulation of autophagy, cancer-specific microRNAs, mitotic catastrophe, or necrosis-like programmed cell death.

Plant-derived compounds are often associated with fewer toxic side effects compared to synthetic compounds. Furthermore, the extraction of secondary metabolites from plants is often more cost-effective than chemical synthesis, particularly for compounds that are difficult or impossible to synthesize chemically. In recent years, numerous researchers have discovered new plant-derived compounds with anticancer properties. These valuable secondary metabolites can be extracted from plants cultivated on plantations or obtained from plant materials produced through in vitro cultures (e.g., suspension cultures and transformed roots). The in vitro culture techniques offer an alternative to traditional methods as they are conducted under strictly controlled conditions, regardless of the season or climate zone.

The current Special Issue is open to high-quality original and review articles that contribute to the knowledge of recent developments in bioactive plant metabolites with cytotoxic activity and potential anticancer properties. We welcome scientific contributions related to, but not limited to, the following topics:

  1. Isolation and identification of novel phytochemicals with anticancer potential using modern chromatographic and spectral methods;
  2. Plant in vitro cultures and biotechnological strategies to increase the accumulation of the molecules with anticancer activity;
  3. The role of oxidative stress in cancer;
  4. Anticancer activity of pure compounds and plant extracts (in vitro and in vivo studies).

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Molecules is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • e-Book format: Special Issues with more than 10 articles can be published as dedicated e-books, ensuring wide and rapid dissemination.
