Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The use of macrocyclic structures, such as cyclodextrins (CDs), cucurbit[n]urils (CBs), pillar[n]arenes (PAs), and calixarenes (CAs), in the field of host–guest chemistry has been established as a versatile tool for implementing supramolecular catalysis, artificial biomimetic receptors, delivery of functional compounds or chemical sensing, to name a few examples. The aim of this Special Issue is to advance the knowledge on supramolecular organic chemistry based on a multi-angled view. We hope to bring together a range of contributions starting with a better perception of host–guest interactions, from a fundamental point of view, to applications in (photo)catalysis, organic synthesis, sensing, stimuli-responsive delivery, or smart soft materials.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Organics is an international peer-reviewed open access quarterly journal published by MDPI.

The supramolecular interactions in water between β-cyclodextrin and the open and closed photochromic forms of two bis-cationic dithienylethenes, characterized by different electronic properties, were investigated aiming at underlying the key aspects of the recognition process. The dithienylethene equipped with the cyclopentenyl unit showed a difference in binding free energies to the β-cyclodextrin between the open and closed photochromic forms of about 1 kJ/mol. Conversely, the dithienylethene equipped with the perfluorinated cyclopentenyl unit not only was a better guest but showed a three times higher difference in the binding of free energies between the open and closed isomers.
