Dear Colleagues,
Recently, the continued reliance on fossil fuel places great pressure on the role that energy, and its spatialized context, should play in environmental and policy debates. There is a need for:
- A shift towards a cleaner production system;
- More environmentally friendly energy sources allocation and assessment;
- Refining the information regarding energy demand and consumption (e.g., heating and cooling).
This process is necessary in order to keep the rate of greenhouse gas (GHG) emission—a major cause of climate change which challenges the global security of energy and environmental health—feasible.
Sources like solar, wind, hydro, and biomass have become increasingly popular as attractive alternatives to fossils fuels around the globe. However, there is still the need to systematize the necessary monitoring methods aimed at the estimation of the availability of resources and their correct and greener exploitation also in a Nexus perspective.
To achieve a sustainable exploitation and an estimation of the capital and operative costs of the different technological solutions, before making renewable energy (RE) and energy efficiency (EE) investments, it is important to couple the potential resources data with the spatial assessment of the energy demand and consumption. In particular, while there are plenty of traditional methodological approaches for evaluating RE potentials, it is still necessary:
- To highlight the role of remote sensing (RS) technology, payloads, and methods to provide reliable tools for RE mapping and their sustainable exploitation;
- To translate in practical recommendation the scientific outcome of the abovementioned process.
In this Special Issue are welcomed all the contributions able to illustrate not only state-of-the-art applications, but also technological and methodological improvements in the allocation, assessment, and sustainable exploitation of RE potentials by means of RS.
