Dear Colleagues,
It is our pleasure to announce a new Special Issue, entitled “Recycled Construction and Demolition Materials for Sustainable Development”, in the journal Sustainability.
Waste materials produced during construction and demolition (C&D) activities cause severe environmental and economic problems worldwide. Until the early 21st century, the common practice in many countries was, and it still is to some extent, to dispose of these materials in landfills. A diverse range of materials such as concrete, bricks, excavated earth, timber, asphalt, waste rock, metals and tailings fall under the category of C&D waste materials.
Research conducted in recent years has shown that recycled or reclaimed C&D materials have the potential to provide a more sustainable approach to development. The redirection of recovered materials into construction lowers the demand for depleting natural resources and solves the problem of growing waste stockpiles. One of the biggest challenges in the re-use of C&D waste materials is the economic and environmental viability of recycling and the integration of the secondary material market. On the other hand, the use of C&D waste materials in field applications has been limited by non-uniformity, the presence of contaminants, inconsistent material properties and the absence of design guidelines.
In this Special Issue of Sustainability, we aim to publish contributions of experimental, analytical and numerical investigations that evaluate the performance of construction materials fully or partially consisting of C&D waste. Submissions are also sought from research works regarding new developments of recycling technologies related to C&D waste. Both original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following:
- Properties of recycled C&D materials;
- Soil stabilization using C&D materials;
- Solid waste management;
- C&D materials in road pavements;
- Environmental impact assessment;
- Mechanical and structural performance;
- New construction technologies;
- Case studies and/or field trials.

Manuscript Submission Information

For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
