Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Increasing concerns related to climate change and global warming are driving the transformation of energy systems to a cleaner and more sustainable future, by developing the energy framework without fossil fuels. One of the most promising pathways to hit the carbon neutral aim goes through the transition from hydrocarbon to hydrogen economy through the technological development of innovative hydrogen production, storage, transportation and utilisation, for decarbonisation in industrial, residential and commercial sectors.

The Special Issue aims to collect original research and review articles from authors working on the technological development of hydrogen energy systems. Various topics will be considered, including, but not limited to:

  • Sustainable and low-carbon hydrogen production from water, biomass, natural gas, coal or other sources
  • Hydrogen storage technologies, including the material-level, component-level and system-level
  • Hydrogen transport solutions, such as mobilised, long-distance transport, marine, underground pipeline
  • Integrated hydrogen energy systems for heating, cooling and electricity generation
  • Hydrogen gas network for heating and cooling
  • Hydrogen refuelling stations
  • Fuel cells technologies for combined heat and power
  • Hydrogen internal combustion engine or hydrogen turbine
  • Hydrogen as a feedstock for industry and chemicals
  • Hydrogen carriers, such as NH3, CH4 and alcohols

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Hydrogen is currently enjoying a renewed and widespread momentum in many national and international climate strategies. This review paper is focused on analysing the challenges and opportunities that are related to green and blue hydrogen, which are at the basis of different perspectives of a potential hydrogen society. While many governments and private companies are putting significant resources on the development of hydrogen technologies, there still remains a high number of unsolved issues, including technical challenges, economic and geopolitical implications. The hydrogen supply chain includes a large number of steps, resulting in additional energy losses, and while much focus is put on hydrogen generation costs, its transport and storage should not be neglected. A low-carbon hydrogen economy offers promising opportunities not only to fight climate change, but also to enhance energy security and develop local industries in many countries. However, to face the huge challenges of a transition towards a zero-carbon energy system, all available technologies should be allowed to contribute based on measurable indicators, which require a strong international consensus based on transparent standards and targets.
