Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
This Special Issue concentrates on the convergence of the Internet of Things (IoT) and sustainable development. It will examine how IoT systems can create newness in sustainability over countless regions including environmental conservation, smart cities, renewable energy, waste management, agriculture, and water resource management. Exploiting IoT technologies, this Special Issue looks to inscribe the daunting challenges of optimizing resource usage, reducing waste, improving efficiency, and promoting sustainability-driven decision-making.
The scope of this Special Issue includes theoretical, experimental, and practical research contributions that demonstrate the application of IoT for sustainable solutions. Key topics covered will include:
- Energy-efficient IoT solutions for environmental monitoring.
- IoT-driven smart city infrastructure for sustainability.
- Sustainable IoT systems for precision agriculture and food security.
- Water resource management and pollution control through IoT systems.
- IoT in circular economy models (waste reduction, recycling, and smart waste management).
- IoT-enabled renewable energy integration and grid management systems.
- Sustainability metrics and tools using IoT technologies.
- Ethical considerations, policies, and regulations for IoT in sustainability contexts.
The purpose of this Special Issue is to advance novel research and emerging solutions in IoT technologies that deliver sustainable development. It will provide a forum for researchers, engineers, planners, and practitioners to share innovative methodologies, architectures, and IoT-based approaches to achieving sustainability objectives. This Special Issue will also highlight how IoT systems can be used in achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and expand on perceptions into how technology can assist in attaining sustainability in various fields.
This Special Issue will be able to address the shortcomings in present-day technical investigations by concentrating on the implementation of the IoT, especially for sustainable development. Even though there are separate growing bodies of literature on both IoT and sustainability, the combination of these areas is still in its developing stage. The current literature concentrates on either the development of IoT or the conceptual designs for sustainability without providing satisfactory insights into how IoT technologies can be modified and installed to meet sustainability targets.
Having brought together the scientific explorations from both spheres, this Special Issue will achieve the following outcomes:
- Furnish case studies and substantial evidence on how IoT contributes to assessable improvements in sustainability.
- Present comprehensive reviews of IoT technologies that have been effectively implemented to enable resource capability in particular industries such as agriculture, urban planning, and renewable energy.
- Investigate how IoT can make possible real-time monitoring and decision-making to guarantee more accountable resource management and sustainable development practices.
- Connect technological advances and their real-world applications in sustainability contexts, offering interdisciplinary approaches that can bring IoT and socioeconomic policy considerations together.
This Special Issue dispenses directly into sustainability by providing functional and measurable IoT solutions that can cope with (and solve) the complex challenges of sustainable progress. It will:
- Elucidate and estimate how IoT systems can upgrade sustainability metrics, comprising energy consumption, waste minimization, and water protection.
- Provide ingenious tools for the computation and tracking of sustainability goals, assisting policy makers and businesses to notify decisions in regard to the real-time data given by IoT systems.
- Encourage a holistic approach to sustainability by scrutinizing technological, environmental, and socioeconomic aspects of IoT applications.
- Propose frameworks and policy recommendations for the integration of IoT within sustainability laws, regulations, and administration models, corroborating technological improvements to support sustainable development priorities.
By examining the synergy between IoT and sustainability, this Special Issue will significantly enrich the literature, provide actionable insights, and guide future research and policy development aimed at achieving sustainable outcomes.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Sustainability is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
