Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
Wireless communication has been the backbone of data communication for a few decades or so. However, wireless communication has become even more significant in recent times due to several key advancements; examples are energy efficiency, the immense increase in mobile device use, the Internet of Things (IoTs), 5G and B5G, and the need for wireless communication in the quality enhancement of everyday life (health care, transportation, etc.). Therefore, it is even more significant to improve the data communication of both wireless channels and systems. In this regard, symmetry in wireless communication can play a pivotal role. This is because the complexity of the wireless communication system is much reduced given that the channels in use are symmetrical. The use of massive Multiple-Input, Multiple-Output (mMIMO) and Intelligent Reflecting Surface (IRS) technologies can be utilized to develop symmetrical wireless channels.
This Special Issue will highlight the significance of symmetry for modern wireless communication systems. A secondary objective is to bring about the challenges faced in the development of symmetric wireless channels. This Special Issue will also focus on technologies, such as IRS, mMIMO, etc., that can convert asymmetric wireless channels into symmetric ones through the use of Machine Learning (ML) techniques. Lastly, this Special Issue will also introduce key technologies usable for the development and investigation of symmetric wireless data communication systems.
In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following:
- Performance analysis of symmetric and asymmetric wireless channels;
- The role of symmetry in modern wireless communication systems;
- Applications of IRS for symmetric wireless systems;
- Applications of mMIMO for symmetric wireless systems;
- The use of ML techniques for symmetric wireless channels;
- The significance of symmetric wireless systems for IoT systems;
- The role of symmetric wireless systems in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSs);
- The investigation of optical symmetric wireless channels;
- Applications of symmetry in visible light communication (VLC)/Li-Fi.
- We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Symmetry is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
