Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The groundwater cycle and chemistry is changing significantly due to human activities and climate change, and this has led to many problems related to water resources, ecology and the environment, which affect the sustainable development of the environment, economy and society. To address the new challenges, it is important to understand the mechanisms of the changes in groundwater balance and chemistry, as well as predict their evolutionary trends, to develop targeted regulatory measures. Environmental isotopes and hydrochemistry in hydrogeology can help to (i) quantify groundwater recharge, flow and discharge; (ii) trace chemical reactions, including water–rock reactions and the degradation of pollutants; (iii) identify source of solutes and pollutants; (iv) characterize the mechanisms and flux of element/nutrient cycling; and (v) identify mixing processes, such as seawater intrusion, groundwater–surface water interaction in the hyporheic zone, etc.; thus, this study could serve as a powerful research tool.

The purpose of this Special Issue is to publish original studies, as well as review articles, addressing recent advances in the above-mentioned areas. We therefore invite you to submit your latest research findings in this field.

In this Special Issue, original research articles and reviews are welcome. Research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following: 

  • Evolution of groundwater cycle and hydrogeochemistry under the impacts of human activities and climate change;
  • Mechanism of ecosystem evolution due to changes in groundwater balance and hydrochemistry;
  • Changes in groundwater balance and quality due to irrigation, urbanization, and water conservancy projects;
  • Effects of surface water–groundwater interaction on water resources and water quality;
  • Source identification and degradation pathways of pollutants in groundwater;
  • Hydrogeochemical evolution during managed aquifer recharge (MAR) or groundwater remediation;
  • Transport mechanism and monitoring techniques of nuclear contaminants in aquifer and vadose zone;
  • Seawater intrusion processes and investigation;
  • Groundwater dating and updating rates;
  • Quantifying element/nutrient fluxes in Earth’s critical zone.

All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Water is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
