Satisfaction of Indigenous Tourism from Residents’ Perspective: A Case Study in Nantou County, Taiwan
Round 1
Reviewer 1 Report
Thank you for letting me read the article on "Tribal residents' satisfaction of tourism development. The manuscript aims to analyse a relevant question whether indigenous residents are happy with tourism. The research employed PLS-SEM.
My suggestions to imporve the paper are the following:
- define what do you understand by 'tribal residents' - in the current version of the paper there is no definition of any kind. In more, the authors use different terminology: 'aboriginal residents', 'tribal residents', 'indigenous villages'. Different terminology is applied already in the title. I suggest using only one specific terminology after having defined that.
- my second concerni is that readers who - like me - are not familiar with 'indigenous peples of Nantou in Taiwan' do not discover after having read the article who these people are and what is the reason to study this specific group of people.
- explain what do you mean by 'tourism development' (p. 1 l. 28) Please provide more informaton on what happened in this area and why is this interesting.
- in the introduction you speak about sociocultural impact referring to 'cross-cultural communication' (l. 40, 'cultural identity' l. 41, 'cultural self-esteem' l. 41 - these concepts are not linked to your research nor to your findigs.
- on p. 2 under Sociocultural, economic and environmental impact you argue that many studies investigated these issues but you fail to evidence the results of these studies and how such results correlate to you own research.
- reformulate the section title 'Indigenous people's tourism perception' - what does this mean?
- l. 88 'Tourism development ... ' I do not understand the sentence.
- l. 102 you speak about 'perception after tourism development' please provide more information on this aspect: who was responsible for such development (local residents? foreigners?) and what do you mean by 'tourism development'?
Research methods:
- explain what 'theory of reasoned active' is and how is this useful for your study.
Conclusions:
- please provide more information on how this research contributes to the advancement of knowledge, its originality, research limits and future paths.
I hope my suggestions help to improve the paper.
Author Response
Thank you for letting me read the article on "Tribal residents' satisfaction of tourism development. The manuscript aims to analyse a relevant question whether indigenous residents are happy with tourism. The research employed PLS-SEM.
My suggestions to improve the paper are the following:
Q1: define what do you understand by 'tribal residents' - in the current version of the paper there is no definition of any kind. In more, the authors use different terminology: 'aboriginal residents', 'tribal residents', 'indigenous villages'. Different terminology is applied already in the title. I suggest using only one specific terminology after having defined that.
Ans: thank you for comment. After several diggings, we used “indigenous” to substitute “Tribal”, “aboriginal”.
Q2:- my second concern is that readers who - like me - are not familiar with 'indigenous peoples of Nantou in Taiwan' do not discover after having read the article who these people are and what is the reason to study this specific group of people.
Ans: Thank you for comment. As for indigenous tourism, we use “indigenous tourism” to explain the meaning. (line 37-42). And also in line 95-109 and 134-140, we explained the uniqueness and why were the subjects selected for the study.
Q3: explain what do you mean by 'tourism development' (p. 1 l. 28) Please provide more information on what happened in this area and why is this interesting.
Ans: Thank you for comment. Please refer to line 134-140.
Q4: - in the introduction you speak about sociocultural impact referring to 'cross-cultural communication' (l. 40, 'cultural identity' l. 41, 'cultural self-esteem' l. 41 - these concepts are not linked to your research nor to your findigs.
Ans: Thank you for comment. These referring were discussed in line250-256.
Q5: on p. 2 under Sociocultural, economic and environmental impact you argue that many studies investigated these issues but you fail to evidence the results of these studies and how such results correlate to you own research.
Ans: Thank you for comment. We listed related finding from line 78-93.
Q6: reformulate the section title 'Indigenous people's tourism perception' - what does this mean?
Ans: Thank you for comment. We reformulate the title to “ Indigenous people’s attitude toward indigenous tourism”
Q7:- l. 88 'Tourism development ... ' I do not understand the sentence.
Ans: Thank you for comment. We deleted the sentence.
Q8: 102 you speak about 'perception after tourism development' please provide more information on this aspect: who was responsible for such development (local residents? foreigners?) and what do you mean by 'tourism development'?
Ans: Thank you for comment. We deleted these sentences. Please refer to line 95-109.
Research methods:
Q9- explain what 'theory of reasoned active' is and how is this useful for your study.
Ans: Thank you for comment. We explained it from line 112-119.
Conclusions:
Q10:- please provide more information on how this research contributes to the advancement of knowledge, its originality, research limits and future paths.
Ans: Thank you for comment. We re-write conclusions and added limitations and suggestions for future section.
Reviewer 2 Report
Thank you for the opportunity of reviewing this article, which approaches a topic of high interest both theoretic and for policy makers.
Some suggestions and corrections that should be made are as follows:
The keywords are missing. Should be added
The title could be shorten and thus be more suggestive
When the survey was conducted?
Data on the questionnaire is missing. Should be added
The Conclusions section is too short and does not include any reference to practical or theoretical applications or impact, limitations and further study
Language revisions are needed. E.g. lines 12-14: "The present study 13 interviewed 391 tribal residents located in two tribal villages located in Nantou County, Taiwan 14 ages of 20-70 (174 men and 217 women)"; 112-114-16: positive instead of positively , and many more
Good luck with the review!

Round 2
Reviewer 1 Report
Thank you for the revised version. The case study context and aim are much clearer. I still find confusing the use of tribal and indigenous terms. Maybe because the world 'tribal' bring such a stereotyped image into my mind. Consider using the term indigenous in a consistent way in the manuscript.
L. 39-40 you argue that "Indigenous tourism is one of the fastest growing sections of the tourism industry". I doubt that. Do you have any evidence to prove such an assumption? maybe there is a rising interest in "isolated" cultures, but I would be careful to say that this is one of the fastes growing sections of tourism. By the way, what do you mean by "sections of tourism"? Tourism products or services? Please be more precise in using proper scientific terminology.
Your research is robust, its impact could/should be reinforced by a nicely and properly exposed argumentation. Adding a map of the research area and a photo of these indigenous people would help readers to locate better your analysed case.

Ans: Thank you for comment. Yes, tourism industry comprised of 8 sections but indigenous tourism is not in the category. Therefore, we deleted the sentence and also add another reference (reference 1) to support our point.
Q3:Your research is robust, its impact could/should be reinforced by a nicely and properly exposed argumentation. Adding a map of the research area and a photo of these indigenous people would help readers to locate better your analysed case.
Ans: Thank you for comment. We added a map (figure 1) and several photos (figure 2) to indicate the survey area and some traditional dresses and activities of the indigenous people. They belong to the Bunun tribe and is noted for their tradition singing. We had added some more information about Bunun. Please refer to L. 128-140.
