Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The manuscript deals with a systematic kinetic study on the formation of high-valent Mn=O species upon oxidation of Mn(III) porphyrin complexes. Taking into account widespread applications of the latter in oxidation catalysis, this quantitative information can be highly useful for the future optimization of such catalytic systems and certainly deserves publication. The manuscript is written with great care and may be published “as is”, after removal the reminder text in the acknowledgement section.

Reviewer 2 Report

The authors report on the study of formation of Mn-oxo complexes within the TPPS ligand framework via reaction with various oxidation agents. Apart from the basic science reported with the meticulous detailed kinetic analysis, results reported are significant since they can be applied in waste-water treatment and knowledge can be transferred not only to dye oxidation, but other important reactions with other metal complexes that involve oxo-species and oxidations.

The manuscript is very concise, very neatly prepared and very easy for the reader to follow. Results are presented in a clear manner. Overall, I propose the manuscript be published as is, with two minor things to check:

  1. line 40: "new methods" - I think something should be added here to clarify the term, e.g. "new methods for the..."
  2. line 233: the potential reported should be referenced to Fc or NHE or Ag/AgCl electrode.

We have extended the text

  1. line 233: the potential reported should be referenced to Fc or NHE or Ag/AgCl electrode.

The potential quoted is the standard electrode potential, i.e. vs NHE, which is now included in the revised manuscript
