Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The authors present the results of a comparative study on Ba- and Bi-iodates families focusing on similarities of sequences of layers (polar and non-polar) in the atomic structures. The new compound of Ag-Bi-sulfate-iodate was also obtained and studied. Authors use a topology-symmetry approach and relate the atomic structures with the optical properties of the studied compounds. The experimental methodology and data analysis are performed correctly. Tools used are properly chosen. The results are supported with satisfyingly deep analysis and discussion. The main conclusion on the similarity of crystal structures of studied materials is well supported, and the new methodology used was confirmed by convincing results. I find the manuscript well written with good scientific soundness, and worth publishing.

I found only minor mistakes listed below:

  1. lines 24-25: the sentence lacks a predicate - please complete
  2. line 52 (and forth): a term "Greece notation" corresponding to notation with Greek characters sounds rather unfortunate. I suggest rephrasing.
  3. line 147: gaussian --> Gaussian

Author Response

We thank you for the reading manuscript with the attention and the bug fixed: l.24-25 predeicate was missed and uis installed now, l.52 we delete Greece and change the text. l.147 gaussian is corrected Gaussian. We are working with the English and change the text - see red color, we hope is looks now better.

In this manuscript, the authors report a new non-centrosymmetric iodate Ba(IO3)OH. The OD topology-symmetry analysis was performed together with its related structure Bi(IO3)O. I really like the results the authors gave and discussed, which are highly important for the community of iodate and its structural chemistry. The results in this submission are clearly presented. I recommend its acceptance to Symmetry and I have only one point to mention. I totally understand the main finding of this paper lies on a new non-centrosymmetric iodate and its OD topology-symmetry analysis. But, it is better to give more experimental characterization data for the title compound, like infrared spectrum, diffuse reflectance spectrum, and thermal behavior analysis, etc, since the single crystals of title compound was obtained with a high yield of about 90 %. Maybe, this part can be added in the section of Supporting Information.

Author Response

Thank you for reading our manuscript with attention and suggestions made. Additional information would be useful, however only IR  masurements could be made if not for our colleague absence due to vacation. There is no doubt that only O3 is OH-group in compound, thus IR could confirm this. For DTA analysis we have not sufficient crystals. We were working with the improvement of English, and many corrections are introduces and marked by red in manuscript.

This contribution from the group of Belokoneva describes two iodate families for Structure-properties relations. A new non-centrosymmetric iodate Ba(IO3)OH are synthesized by hydrothermal. Those structures may be ordered or disorder. It possible to carry out an exhaustive crystal chemical comparison including semi-quantitatively evaluation of nonlinear optical properties based on structural data by the topology-symmetry analysis. However, it reads much like a progress report rather than a manuscript suitable for publication. Thus, I would love to recommend acceptance in Symmetry after major revisions.

  1. Compare the Structure-properties with other system?
  2. Which one is more important between metal or iodate families for Structure-properties relations?
