Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

This paper performed a FEM numerical study for the purpose of engineering designing exposed base plates under the action of axial and bending loads. The results looks solid. However, a brief discussion of the more fundamental material problem should help reader gain broad context of engineering design. For example, the fundamental challenge of strength-ductility tradeoff for an engineering material in this paper "A review on the strengthening of nanostructured materials"

Reviewer 2 Report

The manuscript under the title: “Monotonic response of exposed base plates of 2 columns: numerical study and a new design method”  is relevant for the Metals journal. The article based on computer modelling. The organization of the article is appropriate. Overall, the paper is well prepared. Nevertheless, the article required some improvements:

- the abstract and introduction part – please add the main aim of article / research

- the results  needs more discussion and supplementing by up-to-date references

- please check the format of references, especially no. 8
