Intelligent Timber Damage Monitoring Using PZT-Enabled Active Sensing and Intrinsic Multiscale Entropy Analysis
Round 1
Reviewer 1 Report
Dear Authors
Thank you for the paper. It is well written, it contains all the important parts. The topic is very interesting and innovative. I see a benefit in it for future application. Nevertheless, I have some critical comments and suggestions for improving the paper.
Line 82 : Probably, you wanted to write: „widely used“
Section 2.2 – What are the usually used scales of Tau in MSE? Could you specify that?
Line 235: Could you specify timber species? Some physical and mechanical properties like density or moisture content are also desirable.
Table 1 – I would recommend you to state „hole diameter“ and „hole depth“ on the same position/line for Group B and Group C.
Line 270: Please, provide average relative humidity and air temperature during the experiment.
Figure 8 – Could you explain it more clearly? I do not understand those values in the matrix.
Discussion could be more extensive. Provide some suggestion for the future research in the Conclusion section.
Stay safe and best regards!

Reviewer 2 Report
This paper proposes a novel timber damage monitoring method using PZT-enabled active sensing and intrinsic multiscale entropy analysis. The analysis was operated by PZT-Enabled Active Sensing and Intrinsic Multiscale Entropy Analysis, companied by referring experiment.
Overall, the paper presents relatively in-depth investigation and offers a clear contribution to the existing knowledge. The procedures of test and analysis are well described and the results are well explained. English writing is good in almost all parts of the paper. However, the reviewer does not agree with the expression of "Timber has been used as the main material of structural buildings in practical engineering", since the concrete is the main material of structural buildings. All in all, this paper meets the requirement of Applied Sciences and is suggested to published in this journal after a minor revision.
