Title of the peer-reviewed manuscript: “Research on Noise Reduction Method of Negative Pressure 2 Wave Signal Based on VMD”.

The manuscript consists of an Abstract, Keywords, an Introduction section, two main parts, a Conclusion section, list of References from 27 titles, 19 of which were published during the last 5 years. The manuscript contains 15 Figures and 4 Tables.

The goal of the study is to improve the quality of diagnostics of the state of the urban water supply system with the detection of the leak location according to the principle of negative pressure wave. The paper solves the signal denoising problem in the pressure signal by a method based on variational mode decomposition technology.

The studies were carried out by the method of direct natural experiment in laboratory and field conditions on a real pipeline in Shanghai.

Questions and recommendations:

1. Please explain from what conditions in equation (2) the authors chose the value of the correction factor С=1. What does this coefficient depend on for a real pipeline?

2. Have the authors investigated the dependence of the accuracy of determining the leak location on the shape of the pipeline, as well as on the distance between the sensors?

3. I suggest that the authors supplement the Introduction section with a description of the structure of the paper. In the Conclusion section, add plans for your further research.

4. I would like to note the high practical significance of the research results presented in the paper. However, at the same time, I recommend that the authors more clearly formulate the scientific novelty.

In general, the manuscript is well-written, and the material presented in it is of interest to scientists, researchers and specialists in the field of pipelines condition diagnostics. I recommend this article for publication after minor revision.
