Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The manuscript discusses the comparison between two ice fish (hemoglobin-less and hemoglobin-containing species) on response to NO modulation of cardiac activity under basal and loading.

The manuscript is interesting for readers of biology, pharmacology, and ichthyology. The manuscript was well written and provides scientific value. Just some minor corrections need to be addressed.

Reduce the number of keywords to six.

The materials and methods need numeric subtitle order.

in vivo could be italicized in all manuscript.

Reviewer 2 Report

The authors clearly know what they're doing because they have extensive experience in this line of inquiry.  The data are solid and the interpretations appropriate. Unfortunately, the manuscript needs extensive editing, as it too often ranges from difficult-to-understand to impenetrable. It would be a shame if this work was not as widely appreciated as it could be because of the current writing style.  I note that Bruno Tota, a frequent collaborator with the authors, is missing as a co-author on this manuscript. I assume he’s now retired.  If at all possible, however, I strongly recommend that he be asked to do the extensive editing that this manuscript needs. I’ve indicated in the Abstract the level of re-writing that I think the entire manuscript requires to make it publishable.  I’ve also put minor comments throughout the PDF that I’m returning.
