Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The study considers the second main spatial problem of the elasticity theory solved for a layer with a longitudinal cylindrical cavity with periodic displacements given on the surface of the layer. The solution of the problem is based on the generalized Fourier method for a layer with a cylindrical cavity. Periodic displacements is applied with expansion of the solution for a layer (without a cavity) in Fourier series with an additional problem of study.

The methodology is sound and derivations are corerctly shown. I have few minor suggestions:

1. Figure 4 to be larger, if legends can be added for 1, 2 and 3 lines, it would make reading easier.

2. Rewrite the discussion or add another heading with conclusion. Avoid two sentence paragraphs, looks very informal.

Page 1 – lines 5 to 8 – Addresses of authors are incomplete; no town or country are given for "KHAI" University.

There is no point in citing references that are not directly related to the paper's topic.

Page 9 – lines 283 to 286 – this conclusion is in complete contradiction with the whole previous text – work. All the tedious calculations are derived for a single axis direction and cannot be applied to others??? Please, clarify!

Using letter "sigma" for Poisson's ratio (as well as for stresses) is unacceptable.

There are several problems with English language grammar in omitting the auxiliary verbs in sentences.

List of references is not written according to the Journal's template.

The same goes for the author Contributions" section.

Scanned pages of the manuscript with marked errors and proposed corrections are enclosed.

Title: The influence of periodic loading on an infinite layer with a cylindrical cavity

Reviewer Comments

This work is a modeling investigation to provide the solution to the periodic load effects on an infinite layer having a cylindrical cavity, considering periodic displacements applied on the surface of the layer. The manuscript content is fitted to the journal scope however, there are several comments that require the manuscript to be modified before publication.

1.    Please update the title to be self-representative of the content.

2.    The authors' affiliations are incomplete. There is one affiliation with different email addresses, so you should write affiliation for one time.

3.    The introduction section doesn’t highlight the scope of the research. In reality, materials behavior even within the elastic regime could be linear or nonlinear (for example metals compare to polymers). You must provide categories in which the presented model could be applied

4.    The number of keywords should be 4 or 5. “cylindrical cavity in a layer” is not a keyword

5.    Please modify the introduction section by giving the lack of science in previous works that modified you to perform this research. The lack of science should be concluded in the last paragraph of the Introduction by highlighting the novelty of this study

6.    You are not introducing material in section 2, so why do you consider the word “materials” in the title? In fact, you must at least introduce the categories of the materials which could be considered in this work

7.    Figure 1: the caption has not defined the image well, and detailed information about the image part should be described. Load and boundary conditions are not demonstrated well.

8.    Section 2 should be modified to represent the “material” and “method”. Please explain how the periodic load is applied. Also, could you please proved a flowchart of the research methodology?

9.    Section 2 should clearly explain the scope of the research in terms of geometry, type of load, how you apply the load, the load type, location of the cavity, dimension of cavity and limit of layer thickness, etc.

10. The title of section 3 is long and not suitable

11. You have two subsections 3.1 on pages 5 and 7. Please correct it

12. Subsection 3.1 on page 5 is not a result. I suggest you combine it with section 2 and add the flowchart that I mentioned in comment No. 8

13. Line 222: the material properties that you share should be given in section 2. You must also mention what is the typical material name. and if different materials in the same categories could be used

14. Line 223: how did you use the radius of the cavity? Could it be changed? And the effect of other ranges to be analyzed

15. Line 223-224: when explaining the upper and lower boundaries, you must refer to figure 1 for a better representation of the case

16. It is very necessary that you add an image to figures 2, 3, and 4, where you show the path of distances given on the horizontal axis. This enables readers to understand the topic better.

17. In section 4, the discussion must be combined with section 3, in fact when you describe the results, you need to provide the discussion in between

18. You need to provide a separate section for CONCLUSION or CONCLUDING REMARKS, where you explain the main finding with a short discussion

Round 2

Reviewer 2 Report

There is a little confusion with titles of Section 4, while section 5 seems empty.

I propose to rename section 4 to

"Discussion and conclusions" to avoid ambiguity.

Author Response

A technical error has occurred. Section 5 restored.

Reviewer 3 Report

The authors has revised the manuscript, however some of the questions remained as follow:

1. the title is much better now but it is too long, please try to reduce it. I could suggest "A linear elasticity theory to analyze the stress state of an infinite layer with a cylindrical cavity under periodic load"

2. Regarding my previous comment "Point 9" please provide a clear statement for the scope of the research

3. Line 225, you must define the type of materials, and please reference where did the properties are taken?

4. Nothing is provided in the Conclusion Section, except the title

Round 3

Reviewer 3 Report

My points are revised well.

Only a small modification is required in the Conclusion section because it starts with numbering points, however, you need to first provide a brief description of the manuscript content, then the main finding come in bullet points.
