Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The manuscript of Pellegrini and co-authors addresses an interesting issue, namely plant-plant interactions under harsh environmental conditions. The work is pioneer in the sense that, the experimental conditions were set up in natural ecosystems. Also, the topic is yet understudied. Although complementary approaches must follow this research, in my opinion, the approach used and the data produced are sufficiently robust to be published in Plants. I should highlight the overall quality of the text and the robustness of the discussion. In my view, this MS should be immediately accepted for publication. I also attach the annotated MS with minor suggestions.
