Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Agroforestry systems, which involve integrating trees with crops or livestock in the same land area, have proven more effective in sequestering soil organic carbon (SOC) than traditional agricultural practices. This enhanced capability for carbon sequestration plays a pivotal role in the global efforts to combat climate change by reducing greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. In addition, SOC is a crucial indicator of soil health and fertility. Therefore, in-depth, long-term research is needed to explore various aspects of SOC dynamics in agroforestry.

We invite researchers to contribute original research to this Special Issue, focusing on the intricate dynamics of SOC within agroforestry systems. By delving into this topic, we aim to gain a comprehensive understanding of agroforestry's role in enhancing soil health and mitigating climate change.

Key topics could include the following:

  1. The impact of species composition and diversity in agroforestry systems on carbon stocks;
  2. Carbon fluxes in soil–plant–atmosphere systems under different agroecological conditions;
  3. Comparative analyses of carbon sequestration potential between agroforestry and monoculture systems;
  4. The role of agroforestry in climate change mitigation strategies;
  5. Dynamics of particulate organic matter (POM) and mineral-associated organic matter (MAOM) in agroforestry soils and their significance in long-term carbon stabilization;
  6. The importance of soil enzymes in nutrient cycling and their impact on carbon turnover;
  7. The role of nutrient-solubilizing microorganisms in enhancing nutrient availability, boosting plant growth, and influencing overall carbon dynamics;
  8. Carbon modeling in agroforestry systems, using advanced techniques to predict carbon storage and flux across various scenarios;
  9. Studies on biochar application in agroforestry, exploring its role in enhancing soil carbon storage, improving soil health and fertility, and its potential to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions;
  10. Qualitative and/or mechanistic assessment of soil fertility, soil health, and soil carbon sequestration in agroforestry systems.
