Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

We are pleased to introduce a Special Issue on “Recent Research and New Challenges in Underwater Communications and Wireless Sensor Networks”.

Our lovely planet is asking for a change. There are many signs supporting this assertion: climate change, natural resource depletion, and plant and animal species extinction, among others. Additionally, there are many undiscovered species waiting to be studied that may offer potential new applications or uncover secrets in disparate fields such as medicine, genetics, or life conditions. There is a huge gap between our knowledge over the solid (e.g., geology) and liquid parts (oceans and seas, oceanography) of our planet, Earth. Currently, the interest in monitoring and developing ocean- and sea-related applications is very high, supported by a variety of funding programs around the world: the Copernicus Marine Service (European Union), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA, USA), the World Wide Fund For Nature (WWF, in Asia), etc. This growing interest is reflected in this Special Issue, focused on underwater sensor nodes and networks as the main actors in future monitoring efforts, discoveries, and/or applications in ocean/sea environments.

Authors are invited to submit reviews or completely original, unpublished papers, not under review in any other conference or journal, discussing the state of the art, standards, implementations, running experiments, applications, new research proposals, and industrial case studies in this field

The research areas may include (but are not limited to) the following:

  1. Underwater communications—modems, protocols, and applications;
  2. Underwater acoustic (/wireless) sensor networks—topology, technology, and devices;
  3. Sensor networks for aquaculture, fish farming and monitoring;
  4. Security in underwater wireless networks;
  5. Autonomous underwater vehicles—packet routing and data collecting;
  6. Underwater positioning and location;
  7. Underwater surveillance and monitoring;
  8. Internet of Underwater Things (IoUT);
  9. Maritime infrastructures—control, monitoring, and robot operations;
  10. Marine energy harvesting—control/operation of generators and status monitoring;
  11. Databases and big data for underwater system control.

We look forward to receiving your contributions.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • e-Book format: Special Issues with more than 10 articles can be published as dedicated e-books, ensuring wide and rapid dissemination.
