Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

In the era of Industry 4.0, the convergence of secure robust communication protocols and cutting-edge technologies is revolutionizing industrial automation, giving rise to the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT). At the heart of this transformation lies OPC-UA (Open Platform Communications Unified Architecture) for the convergence between OT and IT. This standardized protocol seamlessly integrates with the IIoT platforms, enabling the development of agile and secure interconnected industrial systems that promote sustainable manufacturing practices.

We are seeking original and high-quality research papers exploring how OPC UA acts as the communication backbone for smart factories, enabling real-time data exchange and advanced manufacturing. Additionally, we encourage submissions that explore the untapped potential of OPC UA features, pushing the boundaries of its application in securing and optimizing industrial automation and control processes.

This Special Issue aims to attract the latest research and findings in the design, development and validation of secure and sustainable industrial systems for industry 4.0, analyzing innovative approaches based on OPC UA to build the next-generation industrial systems.

Topics of interest include, but are not restricted to:

  • Theoretical foundations and practical applications of OPC UA in real-world industrial scenarios.
  • Novel architectures and methodologies for leveraging OPC UA in Industry 4.0.
  • Expanding industrial connectivity and OT/IT convergence through OPC UA.
  • Standardized information models and profiles based on OPC-UA.
  • Security mechanisms and best practices for secure communications using OPC UA.
  • Innovative uses of OPC UA for industrial automation, control, and process optimization.
  • Real-time monitoring with OPC UA in large industrial networks.
  • OPC UA for interoperability in industrial automation.
  • OPC UA in cloud-based industrial automation.
  • Performance evaluation and modeling of OPC UA in industrial networks.
  • OPC UA in Industrial Internet of Things ecosystems.
  • Resource-constrained devices with OPC-UA.
  • Smart manufacturing and industrial cyber–physical systems (ICPS) using OPC UA.
  • Prognosis, predictive maintenance, condition monitoring, and fault diagnosis using OPC UA.
  • Remote access, cybersecurity, and privacy with OPC UA.
  • The integration of Artificial Intelligence with OPC UA.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.

Benefits of Publishing in a Special Issue

  • Ease of navigation: Grouping papers by topic helps scholars navigate broad scope journals more efficiently.
  • Greater discoverability: Special Issues support the reach and impact of scientific research. Articles in Special Issues are more discoverable and cited more frequently.
  • Expansion of research network: Special Issues facilitate connections among authors, fostering scientific collaborations.
  • External promotion: Articles in Special Issues are often promoted through the journal's social media, increasing their visibility.
  • e-Book format: Special Issues with more than 10 articles can be published as dedicated e-books, ensuring wide and rapid dissemination.
