Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

The next steps in industrial evolution extend beyond monitoring and managing industrial processes and equipment. Edge computing, cloud-assisted automatic control, and data analytics applicability to impact industrial processes and decision making will all be vital in this evolution. The Industrial Internet of Things incorporates recent advances in deep learning algorithms, data mining, intelligent control, and the process management of applicable operations and actions. This ability to transform data into valuable knowledge has added significant value to the manufacturing and industry sectors.

IIoT big data processing and computations require significant cloud computing and storage resources. Therefore, deploying edge computing devices and controllers demands new protocols and frameworks. Focusing on industrial process efficiency and productivity, the next generations of IIoT services must provide new methodologies and cloud protocols for intelligent decision inferences, human–robot interactions of robotic systems that can take initiatives, real-time service functionalities with predictive measures, augmented-virtual-mixed reality interfaces, and recommendations focusing on a human-centric and sustainable industrial environment.

This Special Issue will promote state-of-the-art research, covering all aspects of IIoT applications, including the following: industrial protocols, cyber-physical processes and systems, M2M interactions, decision and process levels, implementation, and the testing of intelligent industrial applications; smart algorithms or management processes, human–machine or robotic interactions (HRI), and augmented virtual and mixed reality or interactive control interfaces; Industry 4.0 applicable cases, and Industry 5.0 resilient and human-centric appliances. High-quality contributions addressing any related theoretical and practical aspects are welcomed. The topics of interest for this Special Issue include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • The modeling, analysis, simulation, and verification of intelligent management algorithms and low-power IIoT protocols and applications
  • Cyber-physical systems, IIoT security, intelligent algorithms, and autonomous decision support systems
  • Human–Robotic Interactions
  • Deep-learning IIoT processes and applicable solutions
  • IIoT edge computing
  • Hardware and software co-design of intelligent IIoT management systems. IIoT prototype infrastructure protocols and algorithms
  • Industrial solutions that affect society
  • IIoT systems that focus on the detection, evaluation, and prevention of Industrial threats and risks
  • Data security, privacy, and trustworthiness of communication mechanism protocols in IIoT systems
  • Deep learning-based IIoT solutions. Digital Twins. Applicable cases of augmented, virtual, and mixed reality in the Industry
  • Cloud, fog, and edge computing and new communication protocols for intelligent management and control of Industrial operations
  • Distributed sensory architectures and algorithms monitoring and supporting IIoT services
  • Novel Industrial communication protocols, Industrial haptic systems, teleoperations, and telerobotic appliances

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 100 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for announcement on this website.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Applied Sciences is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2400 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
