Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Palliative and supportive care in cancer focuses on improving the quality of life for patients by addressing symptoms, emotional needs, and overall well-being, regardless of the cancer stage. It plays a critical role in managing multiple distressing symptoms such as pain, fatigue, nausea, and psychological stress associated with cancer and its treatment. In emergency medicine, this approach is particularly important, as cancer patients frequently present with acute symptoms that require urgent attention.

Integrating palliative care in emergency settings aims to provide rapid symptom relief, facilitate advanced care planning, and align treatments with the patient’s goals. Emergency medicine physicians are increasingly involved in initiating palliative discussions, ensuring continuity of care starts in the outpatient oncology setting, and preventing harmful, futile, and costly care in intensive care units towards the end of life. This collaboration between emergency,  palliative, oncology, and critical care teams is essential in preventing unnecessary hospitalizations, reducing suffering, and providing a patient-centered approach during critical moments in cancer care. With a growing emphasis on early palliative care interventions, emergency medicine serves as a key point of entry for timely, compassionate support in cancer care.
