Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Innovations in novel enzyme discoveries impact upon a wide range of industries for which biocatalysis and biotransformations represent a great challenge, i.e., the food industry, polymers, and chemicals industry. However, the concrete use of enzymes in operating industrial processes remains almost exceptional, due to their high production cost, their poor stability, and their low reusability as long as they are not efficiently immobilized on sold carriers. Finding new enzymes that would respond to these limitations is becoming essential in a world where green chemistry will soon no longer be an option. With such an objective, key tools and technologies, such as bioinformatics (i.e., to guide mutant library design), molecular biology (to create mutants libraries), microplates/microfluidics-based methodologies along with mass spectrometry/spectroscopic/chromatographic technologies (to create high-throughput screening methods) and experimental design considerations (for optimization) become essential tools for the quick discovery, enhancement, and, moreover, industrial implementation of enzymes or whole cells in (bio)processes. These technological innovations have to be clean and sustainable integrated processes to meet the growing needs of chemical, pharmaceutical, environmental, and biorefinery industries. In this Special Issue, we mainly focus on works dealing with the high-throughput screening approach for the discovery and engineering of biocatalysts for optimizing their production in integrated processes and for their extraction/purification.
